Established in late 2019, BROWNIE Project is a contemporary art gallery committed to exploring the innovation and social impact of contemporary art in a turbulent present. BROWNIE Project represents contemporary artists who apply exceptionally groundbreaking concept and art form, supporting them to confront the world through ever changing practices.
The 6500 square feet gallery space in Shanghai, China, is contrived as a non-traditional exhibition space with a curatorial pivot on realizing artistic projects and works of various formats. We believe contemporary artists exert critical influence on current social contexts. Thus, we prioritise multidisciplinary, socially engaged artists working across media, while emphasising connections among artists from China, Europe/America, and other Asia-Pacific regions. Within and beyond our gallery space, we actively discover emerging contemporary artists as well as mid-career practitioners who remain ambitious and self-reinventing.
BROWNIE Project also continually develops parallel programs: 「CORRIDOR」 supports young Chinese multidisciplinary artists, 「BROWNIE w/」 invites international galleries to co-curate exhibitions, and「Strange Attractor Program」 nurtures exhibition and education initiative of art-technology-incorporated creativity and practice, collectively fostering cross-cultural and trans-regional dialogue.
